Our Mission
Amiguitos is dedicated to turn the tide of poverty in Veracruz, Mexico one vulnerable child at a time through education. As a non-profit organization, we are changing lives and transforming the community by providing education, meals and community support.
Our Community
Laguna is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Veracruz, Mexico. Prior to launching the Amiguitos program, no one in the community had ever gone to high school with most dropping out at the end of elementary school. Led by Goldi Santana Mera, the program began by first tackling after school support including educating children who were not attending public school and helping children enrolled in school with their homework. It quickly became clear to the team that they would need to address hunger among the kids if they hoped to help them improve their education so Amiguitos launched a meal program to offer kids at least one meal a day. This propelled the kids learning and enabled them to start excelling academically.
Kids are being educated and the attitude towards education is shifting in Laguna. Where most children in Laguna dropped out of school by the end of elementary there are now dozens of students attending high school and Amiguitos has sent four students and three mothers to University. The Governor of Veracruz has proclaimed that “Amiguitos is the best non-profit” in the state of Veracruz, Mexico with the mayor of the city agreeing. As a result, Amiguitos has seen a surge in students and continues to offer support to lift-up children and end poverty through education.
